Was that blood on the ground in front of Maddy Winslow’s Arkansas barn?
It certainly was, and it’s owner, Judson Burke, is hiding inside. The prison wagon he was riding in crashed and Jud took flight, receiving a gunshot wound for his effort. He is determined to use this time to clear his name in the murder of his wife. All he wants from Maddy is food, water and a place to stay for a day or two before he resumes his journey to Texas.
Maddy hides him under the floor in her barn when the law comes calling, and tends to his needs for a couple of days. But craving excitement, she unexpectedly enters the search with him, much to Jud’s chagrin.
Can Jud find justice for his wife with the distraction of his growing feelings for Maddy?
Lawless has written an entertaining story about these determined protagonists. They typical twists and turns in a search for a killer take on a fresh form as Maddy and Jud dodge an unwavering sheriff only too anxious to turn Jud over to the Federal Marshalls.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have others by Ms. Lawless.
